A practical guide to choosing the right fabric for your foulards, scarves and branded accessories.
When brands, hotels and corporate clients reach out to us for the first time, one question comes up almost every time: should I choose silk or polyester?
The honest answer is: it depends on your priorities. Both are excellent choices for custom printed accessories — but they serve different purposes and audiences. This guide will help you decide.
Silk is our speciality. We work with it every day in our Como atelier, and it never ceases to amaze us. Here is why brands choose silk:
Appearance. The natural protein structure of silk creates a unique, luminous sheen that is impossible to replicate artificially. In direct light, a silk foulard glows. This is the most visible and immediate difference from synthetic alternatives.
Drape and feel. Silk falls and moves with a fluidity that feels luxurious against the skin. It is lightweight yet substantial — a quality that is immediately felt when you hold it.
Print quality. Our digital inkjet printing on silk produces exceptional color depth and sharpness. Complex designs, gradients and fine details all reproduce beautifully on twill or charmeuse silk.
Brand perception. Positioning matters. A silk accessory tells your clients and partners that you invest in quality. For luxury brands, 5-star hotels and premium corporate gifts, silk is the natural choice.
Investment. Silk costs more than polyester, both in fabric and production. But the perceived value — and the actual longevity of the accessory — more than justifies the premium.
Polyester has evolved dramatically in recent years. Modern polyester fabrics — satin, twill, chiffon, georgette — are soft, vibrant and durable. Here is why brands choose polyester:
Cost. Polyester is significantly more affordable than silk. For large volume orders or budget-conscious projects, polyester delivers excellent value.
Durability. Polyester is more resistant to wear, washing and UV fading than silk. For accessories that will be used frequently or in demanding conditions, polyester holds up better over time.
Color vibrancy. Digital printing on polyester produces extremely vivid, saturated colors. If bold, bright designs are a priority, polyester excels.
Volume production. For large corporate gifting campaigns, trade show giveaways or retail accessories at accessible price points, polyester makes economic sense.
Choose silk when: premium perception is critical, the accessory represents a high-value gift, or the recipient is in the luxury, fashion or hospitality sector.
Choose polyester when: budget is a constraint, volume is high, or the accessory will be used in everyday or outdoor settings.
