Why Silk Requires Special Care

Silk is one of the most precious natural fibers in the world. Its unique protein structure gives it that unmistakable sheen, lightweight drape and soft touch — but it also makes it more delicate than cotton or polyester. Improper washing can cause irreversible damage: shrinkage, color bleeding, loss of sheen and texture.

Can You Wash Silk at Home?

Yes — with the right technique. The key is gentleness: gentle water temperature, gentle detergent, gentle handling.

Hand Washing Silk (Recommended)

Step 1 — Prepare the water. Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water (maximum 30°C / 86°F). Never use hot water — it will shrink and damage the fibers.

Step 2 — Add a mild detergent. Use a detergent specifically formulated for silk or delicate fabrics. Avoid regular laundry detergents, which are too harsh. A small amount is enough — never pour detergent directly onto the fabric.

Step 3 — Submerge and gently agitate. Place the silk accessory in the water and move it gently with your hands. Do not rub, wring or scrub. Soaking time: 3 to 5 minutes maximum.

Step 4 — Rinse thoroughly. Drain the basin and refill with clean cool water. Rinse the silk gently until all detergent is removed. You may add a few drops of white vinegar to the final rinse — it helps restore the natural sheen of the fabric.

Step 5 — Remove excess water. Do not wring! Gently press the fabric against the basin. Then lay it flat on a clean dry towel, roll the towel up with the silk inside, and press lightly to absorb the water.

Step 6 — Dry flat or hang. Unroll and lay the silk flat on a dry towel, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. You can also hang it to dry, but avoid direct sun which will fade the colors.

Can You Machine Wash Silk?

We do not recommend it for printed silk accessories like foulards and twillies. However, if you must use a machine, use the most delicate cycle available (hand wash or silk cycle), cold water only, a mesh laundry bag, and silk-specific detergent. Always check the care label first.

How to Iron Silk

Iron silk while it is still slightly damp, on the reverse side of the fabric. Use the lowest heat setting (silk or delicate). Never iron directly on a printed design — always use a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Professional Dry Cleaning

For very delicate pieces, heavily embellished accessories or items with complex prints, professional dry cleaning is always a safe option. Inform the dry cleaner that the piece is 100% silk and ask them to use a gentle solvent.

Storage Tips

Store silk accessories in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Avoid hanging printed silk for long periods — fold gently and store in a breathable cotton bag or tissue paper. Never use plastic bags, which can trap moisture and cause yellowing.

Proper care extends the life of your silk accessories dramatically. A well-maintained silk foulard from Como can last decades and still look impeccable.
